Agri varsity will empower youth: Mandya dist minister

Mandya: Agricultural University in Mandya district will empower youth and strengthen the agricultural sector, said agriculture minister N Cheluvarayaswamy.He was speaking during a felicitation programme of MP Basavaraj Bommai to recognise Bommai's contribution in facilitating the filling of lakes and ponds from Lokapavani River, benefiting several villages under the Tubinakere GP, including Elechakanahalli, Yeliyur, Uramara Kasalagere, Ragimuddanahalli, Jakkanahalli and Alugudu.The initiative significantly improved water availability for agriculture and livestock in the region, Cheluvarayaswamy said, adding that the university would help young farmers gain modern agricultural knowledge, research support and technical training, ultimately improving productivity and financial stability.The district minister also credited Bommai for initiating the Elechakanahalli lift irrigation project, which has brought vital water resources to many farming communities.Although Mandya is known for its fertile land and agricultural heritage, the minister noted that only about 55% of the district's land is currently irrigated. He assured that the govt would continue working to expand irrigation facilities and ensure water reaches all parts of the district by filling lakes and local waterbodies.Bommai expressed satisfaction over the successful implementation of the irrigation initiative. He emphasised that a public representative's foremost responsibility is to respond to people's concerns and work towards regional development.Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami of Suttur Mutt and Nishchalanandanatha Swami of Vishwa Vokkaliga Mahasamsthana Mutt in Bengaluru highlighted the importance of water security in preventing rural migration and encouraging youth to pursue agriculture.Srirangapatna MLA Ramesh Bandisiddegowda, former DCM CN Ashwath Narayan and writer Jayaprakash Gowda were present.
