Against odds, care home girls score high in II PUC

Mysuru: Two girls from govt-run care institutions in the city have emerged as II PUC achievers, scoring well and setting firm goals for higher education.Kumari Lakshmi, an inmate of the Govt Children's Home for Girls, scored 422 marks (70%) in the II PUC science stream from Devaraja PU College. A Kannada-medium student till SSLC, she opted for science with the aim of becoming an engineer.Lakshmi is also a budding writer who has penned 10 stories and earlier received a special award from the Karnataka Bala Vikasa Academy under the department of women and child welfare. "My goal is to pursue engineering in the E&C stream. I also love writing stories," she said. She is preparing for the Karnataka CET.Another student, Yashaswini, scored 399 marks in the commerce stream. She studies at Govt Girls High School and PU College, People's Park, and resides at the Kanaka Mahila Sangha After Care Hostel in JP Nagar. She plans to pursue a BBA degree.Mahadeva Kote, member of the Child Welfare Committee, praised their achievements. "Both these children have faced significant adversities and grown up without the emotional support many others receive. Yet, they have excelled using the opportunities provided. Their success is truly inspiring and a role model for all," he said."Their journeys reaffirm that with support and determination, no obstacle is insurmountable," he added.
