MYSORE: Much to the relief of homemakers, city police have solved five chain snatching cases by arresting two youths here on Sunday. The arrest also led the police to solve a murder, seven robberies, five house burglaries and two vehicle theft cases.
Acting on a clue, police arrested the accused, Apsar Khan (26) of Nanjangud and Rehamathullah, a resident of Chamarajanagar, when they came to city to dispose off stolen gold items at N R Mohalla.
During questioning, the duo revealed the list of crimes committed by them. Their partner Rafique is reportedly absconding. Police have formed special teams to arrest the accused.
At a press conference, police commissioner S Parashivamurthy said the arrest led them to trace a murder of Humayun, one of their associates. Following altercation over sharing of the booty, prime accused Apsar and Humayun locked horns and the latter left the group. This irked Apsar, who later hatched to kill Humayun. After sometime, Apsar invited Humanyun, a native of Chamarajanagar, to a secluded place near Nanjangud and murdered him brutally with weapons. Later, the accused set the body on fire to cover the crime, the commissioner added.
Five chain snatching cases registered at Kuvempunagar, Mysore South and Saraswathipuram police stations have been solved by the arrest. In 2008, the city witnessed over 60 chain snatching cases and this year the number has crossed the 20-mark.
Police have seized computers worth Rs 8 lakh, gold and electronic items, two-wheeler and a four-wheeler from them.
