Woman ‘raped’ in 2016, kept ties with actor

MUMBAI: Two days after arresting actor Karan Oberoi for allegedly raping an astrologer, Oshiwara police on Tuesday termed the case “technical” and a “fallout of a consensual relationship”.
According to the FIR, the woman had alleged that Oberoi extorted cash as well as other things from her on the pretext of marriage and blackmailed her with an objectionable video.An official from Oshiwara police station said, “There are contradictions in her complaint. We have no option but to register a complaint even if a wife files a complaint of rape against her husband.” Karan has been remanded to police custody till May 9.
Oberoi’s lawyer Dinesh Tiwari said he had texts exchanged by the actor and the woman to show the “allegations are concocted’’. Terming the case “false and baseless’’, Tiwari said he was “preparing to file for bail for Oberoi as well as proceedings to be instituted to bring the first informant to book for making motivated and false allegations”. He further said, “We are writing to police and will furnish documents, including texts and certain communications sent by her to him which show her FIR is made up.’’
In her complaint, the woman said she came in contact with Oberoi on a dating app in 2016 and they started chatting. According to the complaint, when she went to meet him on October 25, 2016, the actor offered her tender coconut water, drinking which she says she lost consciousness and then was allegedly raped by him. She claimed Oberoi called her the next day to say he had a video of their sexual act and that when she asked him to delete it, he refused to do so and instead demanded money to delete it.
Tiwari said the FIRwas “unbelievable’’. “Her FIR is highly contradictory, as at one place initially she alleges that he sought money to delete a video which he said he had made of them, but later says she got him gifts from Japan and gave him money for his house and repeatedly asked him to marry her,’’ Tiwari said. He pointed out that last year she filed a police complaint in which she alleged “cheating’’, but not “rape”. The police at that time were satisfied with his explanations and no FIR was registered by her, he said.
