The mother later died in a hospital. The daughter walked into Chunabhatti police station and confessed to the murder.

Police said Sabirabanu Sheikh (65) was on a visit to her daughter Reshma Muzaffar's home in Quresh Nagar when an argument broke out between the two. "Prima facie, Muzaffar accused Sheikh of being biased and, in a fit of rage, grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed her multiple times on the face, neck and hands," said a police officer.

Sheikh's son, Akhtar, alerted the family after receiving a distress call from Muzaffar. When family members reached the crime scene, they found Sheikh lying in a pool of blood.

She was rushed to Sion hospital, where doctors initially described her condition as critical, citing severe injuries and heavy blood loss. She was later declared dead.

The police investigation revealed that Sheikh used to visit both her daughters frequently, and that there was reportedly tension between Muzaffar and the rest of the family.

The elder daughter, Nimbi Moushad Qureshi, told police that Muzaffar often argued with their mother over perceived favouritism towards her.

Police lodged an FIR. Muzaffar was detained and was being questioned.
