Woman arrested for running illegal gambling den

MUMBAI: A 39-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of running an illegal gambling den from a stalled construction site in Mira Road.
Shaina Shaikh was taking bets on card games from the ground floor of Geeta Heights, a construction project in Kanakia Nagar, that has been stalled since several years due to some irregularities.
The special team of the Thane rural police raided the building on Monday night and caught 18 men playing cards.Around Rs 5 lakh cash was seized from the spot. They have been booked under the Bombay Prevention of Gambling Act.
Shaikh’s two alleged partners Sukesh Kothian and Bharat Shetty are absconding.
Interestingly, in May 2016, Kothian was arrested for kidnapping a policeman of a raid team.
Kothian, who was trying to flee the spot in his SUV during the raid, decided to offer a lift to all those fleeing. He mistakenly gave a lift to a policeman who was actually chasing them.
