When QR code buys peace of mind, safety

Mumbai: On Thursday evening, police got a call about a special child wandering alone near Regal Cinema junction at Colaba. Senior inspector Pramod Bhawate of the local police station said they checked with other police stations about missing children. “One of our officers on duty spotted the locket around the boy’s neck and saw the QR code… It was scanned and we got a couple of phone numbers,” said the police official. The boy’s family members were contacted. After verifying details, the boy was handed over to his father.The boy, who studies at Jai Vakeel School, Sewri, had been given the pendant with a few other students recently. The locket was distributed as part of ‘projectchetna.in’ to some special students, said Akshay Ridlan, an engineer from Sion who rolled out the initiative. “For me, it was a very soul-satisfying moment when I got a call from the police about this special child being found,” Ridlan said, adding that earlier this month, he distributed a few such lockets at Nair Hospital on the occasion of World Autism Awareness Day as part of ‘Project Chetna’.Tracing a lost child who is mentally challenged can prove as difficult as it is painful for the family. In recent memory, an autistic child from Colaba, Tarun Gupta, who went missing in 2019 when he was 17, had wandered away from home and reports said he was spotted at Panvel station, crying and asking for water. He could never be traced.
