MUMBAI: The Western Railway surveillance cameras have helped nab 674 criminals and unscrupulous persons at railway station premises this year.


"Our RPF personnel made special efforts in containing the menace of theft of passenger belongings both in suburban and long-distance trains with the help of crime intelligence," said WR chief spokesperson Sumit Thakur.

Giving impetus to Operation Yatri Suraksha, WR had installed 3857 CCTV cameras including 488 cameras with inbuilt Facial Recognition System which contains details of criminals along with their photos which are uploaded in the system to curb crimes against passengers.

"From January 1 to September 20, WR’s RPF arrested 674 persons involved in cases of crime against passengers using the cameras, including the recent seven cases in which the accused were apprehended immediately," he added.
