Wall collapse victims' kin to get 1L payout

A day after five children were killed in a wall collapse at Sewri, chief ministerPrithviraj Chavan announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the next of kin of the victims. After visiting the spot along with BMC and Mhada officials on Sunday, the CM ordered a probe and asked the officials to submit a report at the earliest.

MUMBAI: A day after five children were killed in a wall collapse at Sewri, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the next of kin of the victims. After visiting the spot along with BMC and Mhada officials on Sunday, the CM ordered a probe and asked the officials to submit a report at the earliest. BMC and MHADA officials visited the spot along with Chavan.

The officials met the relatives of the deceased and extended their condolences.
Local legislator Bala Nandgaonkar also visited the family of the deceased and handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to the families. An FIR has been lodged against builder R M Bhatted. Assistant municipal commissioner of F-South ward, H A Kale said, "It is not a case of negligence. Inspection does not indicate that the building was in a dangerous condition. The wall may have weakened due to the rains."
A part of the Jubilee Mills compound wall on T J Road, Sewri, in south Mumbai, had collapsed on Saturday killing five boys. The wall, which is adjacent to a playground, collapsed when the boys were playing on the other side.
