MUMBAI: Veteran Marathi journalist

Nilkanth Khadilkar

passed away in a city hospital early Friday. He was 86. Khadilkar, a graduate in economics, helmed 'Nava Kaal', a Marathi morninger which his family owned, for over four decades.

He was the grandson of Krishnaji Prabhakar Khadilkar, noted journalist, playwright and a close confidante of Lokmanya Tilak.

Khadilkar

wrote in a racy style, peppering his leader comments with anecdotes and sharp observations. "Khadilkar's Marathi had a home-spun charm," said Damodar Pendse, a 'Nava Kaal' admirer.
