Two men held for stealing manhole cover

Mumbai: The Gamdevi police arrested two thieves for a stealing a manhole cover. The police have also recovered three iron made manhole covers worth Rs 6,000 from them. Those arrested were identified as Sagir Sayyed, 22, and Irfan Shaikh, 23. The accused were arrested after police studied CCTV footage of the crime scene and collected technical evidence from the call data records of their mobile phones. The two arrested accused had been involved in similar offences registered with the Mahim, Worli and L T Marg police stations. Manholes left open without covers have resulted in accidents, injuries and even deaths in the past when some people fell into them. In August 2017, gastroenterologist Dr Deepak Amrapurkar died after falling into an open manhole after heavy showers near Elphinstone Road caused flooding.TNN
