Two 18-year-old friends on scooter killed after crashing into wrongly parked truck in Mumbai

Mumbai: An 18-year-old college-goer and his female friend of the same age lost their lives after their scooter crashed into a stationary truck at Evershine Nagar in Malad on Wednesday night. Police have registered an FIR against the truck driver for obstructing traffic and parking dangerously, and are looking for the truck driver. This is the third fatal crash in one week in north Mumbai involving two young victims.

According to the FIR, a police constable found both the youngsters — Ridge D'Souza and Kaelyn Fernandes lying unconscious and bleeding profusely on the road around 10.15 pm. They had been riding from Ryan International School towards Dheeraj Kirti society. Fernandes had suffered a deep injury on her forehead while D'Souza had suffered an injury on his neck. The constable took the help of bystanders to carry Fernandes into an autorickshaw. She was rushed to the Evershine Nursing Home where doctors said she had passed.


Families of both Fernandes and D'Souza reached the crash location. D'Souza was taken to the Trauma Care Hospital where doctors said he had succumbed to his injuries.

Friends of the two youngsters said the community was devastated with the incident that occurred just days before Christmas. D'Souza and Fernandes were actively involved in the youth association at the Our Lady of Lourdes Church at Orlem, Malad. "Kaelyn was a zonal coordinator for Evershine Nagar for the church's youth week. Ridge had helped the decor committee. They were both so young. We are all in shock," said a friend from the youth association.

Activist Aditi Chakrabarty said major traffic congestions at Evershine Nagar and Mith Chowky signal persisted and the police should crack down on illegally parked vehicles.
