'Came for one-day study programme, never left': 22-year-old poses as student, sneaks into IIT-Bombay, attends lectures, stays in hostel for days; booked for trespass
MUMBAI: Powai police booked a man for trespassing and attending classes at IIT Powai campus. The 22-year-old, Bilal Teli from Mangaluru, stayed on the IIT Campus from Jun 4 and was noticed by several professors during classes.
During a session, a Professor requested Teli to present his identity card, prompting him to flee. The professor alerted security officials.
On Jun 19, security officials arrested Teli and handed him over to Powai police.
DCP (Zone X) Datta Nalawade said they did not find anything suspicious about the youth. "He said he came to attend a one-day study programme at IIT campus but did not leave as he wanted to attend engineering lectures. He attended classes and stayed there," said Nalawade.
In a complaint, an IIT-B security official said: "On June 4... there was an alert that an unidentified man had entered the office premises without authorisation. Asked to show his identity card, he fled. She shared CCTV images of the suspect with security personnel, who looked for him, but could not locate him at the time."
A police officer said that the person was spotted in a lecture hall, attending a class when he was detained. The police said Bilal has admitted that he is not an IIT student and was illegally staying on on campus from June 2 and June 7, and again from June 10.
Faculty members expressed surprise that security clearance was breached despite stringent norms. "What was his motive? Where did he live on campus all these days, was any lab data accessed... We have several unanswered questions," said a senior professor.
