Customs officer killed, 3 others injured in mishap

Navi Mumbai: A customs superintendent at Mumbai airport was killed after the car in which he was travelling with two of his colleagues, one of whom was at the wheels, crashed into a mini truck parked illegally on the Sion-Panvel highway near a foot-over-bridge at Juinagar on the Panvel lane on Sunday around 9.30am. They were returning home after their duty at Mumbai airport. A biker coming from behind also crashed into the two vehicles and has sustained minor injuries.Brahmananda Naikwadi, Senior inspector of Nerul police station informed that, the deceased customs superintendent has been identified as Narendra Rai (45). Those injured are Abhinav Sinha (45) and Gaurav Sinha (44), both are customs officers at Mumbai airport. The biker has been identified as Deepak Gupta (34), who has sustained minor injuries. The three injured persons are being treated at Apollo hospital, Belapur. Even the mini truck driver identified as Ghanshyam Verma (35) has sustained minor injuries due to the impact of the crash. Inspector Naikwadi said, "As the mini truck driver had illegally parked his vehicle on the extreme left lane, the car driven by Abhinav Sinha attempted to prevent crashing into it, but in vain, as the left side of the car crashed into the mini truck. The accused driver Ghanshyam Verma, has been booked for negligence and for causing death under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita."
