MUMBAI: A 32-year-old diamond trader from Girgaum was attacked by four men carrying a chopper on Friday afternoon. The assailants fled after stealing diamonds worth Rs 4 lakh from the victim, Bhavesh Savane's office.

"I opened the door partially, to see four men standing outside. They pushed me and barged into the office. When I tried to protest, one of them pulled out a chopper from a plastic bag and attacked me,'' said Savane.
As he lay bleeding profusely, the assailants took a pouch containing 500 carats of polished diamonds valued at Rs 4 lakh and fled. "However, the incident has been recorded by the three CCTV cameras installed in Savane's office. The attackers all seem to be in the age group of 25 to 30 years. Prima facie, it looks like a case of robbery and there doesn't seem to be any other motive behind the attack. We are probing the case,'' said Girgaum division ACP Tanaji Ghadge.
Speaking from Savane's bedside at Saifee Hospital, his brother-in-law Kishore Jeevane said, "We do not think there is any conflict or animosity behind the attack." He added that the injuries sustained by Savane were not serious and he would be discharged after two days.
Police are still on the lookout for the four men.
