Three child labourers rescued
MUMBAI: The Malwani police, with the help of residents of the area, rescued six children from an imitation jewellery manufacturing unit in Malad on Tuesday. Their employer, Santosh Singh (25), has been arrested.
"Relatives of two of the children approached us on Tuesday, complaining about the unit located at Malwani's Gate 3 area where the boys were forced to work for long hours. We laid a trap and rescued the two, aged 8 and 13 years. Their mother is a widow and all of them hail from Balia in Uttar Pradesh," the Malwani police said. "When we entered the unit, we found four more children working there. We rescued them as well and arrested the unit owner."
Most of the minors are natives of Uttar Pradesh. While hiring the children, Singh had assured their parents that he would train the boys and help them get decent jobs. "However, after bringing them to Mumbai, he confined the boys to a room and made them work for 18 to 22 hours a day. At times, they were not even given enough food. They were not paid anything," the police said.Singh will be produced before a local court on Wednesday.
