MUMBAI: Police on Monday arrested three bookies from a hotel in Malad while they were placing bets on a cricket match.

A special squad formed by DCP Sangramsinh Nishandar carried out a raid in the room on the eighth floor of Sai Palace hotel on Malad Link Road around 9pm.

Nishandar had received specific information about betting being carried out in the hotel room. When the special squad reached the room, it found the room locked from inside. They sought help from the hotel manager and got access to the room using a duplicate key.

The police found three men who were placing bets on a Cricket World Cup match between West Indies and Bangladesh.

The accused were identified as Sandeep Bhatia, Parvez Shaikh and Deepak Savla.

Three laptops, three dongles, 16 cellphones and two diaries were recovered from their possession.

"The trio has been arrested under provisions of the Gambling Act. We will probe who else was involved in betting and the value of bets placed," said inspector Ravi Adane.
