mumbai: the thane police are trying to verify if abu saifullah hamza, a member of the lashkar-e-taiba militant group who was nabbed in thane district last year, was among the five terrorists involved in the december 13 attack on parliament. thane police commissioner s.m. shangari told this newspaper that he had dispatched hamza's photograph to delhi police commissioner ajai raj sharma on tuesday.
``i have also e-mailed hamza's photograph and details to mr sharma. but i am yet to hear from him about the terrorist being the same person whom we had arrested last year,'' the police commissioner said. hamza and three other militants were nabbed at mumbra in november last year during combing operations launched by the police after a tip-off. it had transpired during investigations that the militants were planning to kill shiv sena leader bal thackeray. as the name of one hamza had cropped up in the names of terrorists involved in the attack on parliament, the thane police decided to verify if it was the same person, mr shangari said. hamza, a resident of faizabad in pakistan and his three associates had confessed to thane police about their plans to eliminate thackeray and trigger off disturbances in the metropolis. hamza was handed over to the jammu and kashmir police, from where he is learnt to have escaped.
