In 1995 the crime branch had registered an offence against Daniel for cheating and his involvement in the multi-crore counterfeit stamp paper racket. Daniel was booked under section 255, 258, 259, 465, 467, 468, 420 of the IPC among others and section 63 of the Bombay Stamp Act. CBI counsel Pradeep Gharat argued before the court that Daniel was involved in the inter-state stamp scam. "The police have been searching Daniel since 1995. His custodial remand and interrogation is important as it will lead the CBI to other important clues to solve the counterfeit stamp scam," Gharat asserted. A CBI team from Mumbai led by superintendent of police, Sutrajitsingh Kapoor had disguised and pitched themselves in Khanapur for the past one week.
