Mumbai rain woes: Triple-digit showers lash city as monsoon revives; boy drowns in open pit
MUMBAI: A 13-year-old boy died after falling into a pit filled with rainwater Monday afternoon near the BKC Metro station in Bandra East. The area saw heavy rainfall throughout the day with a few intense showers in the afternoon. The boy was identified as Faizan Khan. Following the tragedy, teams from the fire brigade, police and the municipal ward office were mobilised. Faizan was immediately rushed to Gurunanak Hospital in a private vehicle. However, he was declared dead on arrival by doctors at the hospital. According to information provided by the Mumbai fire brigade, the pit had been excavated by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL). H-East ward officials informed authorities that the site had been fenced off.An MMRCL spokesperson said, "The said area is part of the Mithi river and has been earmarked for mangrove plantation. As a precaution, this area was fenced and levelled until excavation work for mangrove plantation could commence. It appears that the child unauthorisedly entered this restricted area and accessed the ponding that formed there due to recent heavy rains and the high water level in the Mithi river. The child was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was unfortunately declared brought dead."
