MUMBAI: Activists, Urdu columnists and community leaders have demanded legal action against governor
Bhagat Singh Koshyari
for “mocking” secularism in his letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray.
“I am not surprised at B S Koshyari’s discomfort with secularism. But since he holds a constitutional post which he occupied after taking oath, the governor should not have mocked secularism, which is part of our Constitution.
He should be prosecuted for this breach of the oath,” said senior Urdu columnist Hasan Kamal.
Javed Anand of Indian Muslims for Secular Democracy (IMSD), a think tank, slammed
Koshyari
saying some governors were subverting the democratic process through which they were selected for their posts. Anand said that the pandemic prevents them from hitting the streets with protests. “But mass signatures against the governor and a memorandum to the President requesting him to sack Koshyari may be planned soon,” he noted.
“He should have appreciated Uddhav Thackeray if he is following secularism because secularism is the kernel of our democracy,” said Maulana Burhanuddin Qasmi of Markazul Maarif, a research organization that is based in Jogeshwari.
