Singer Bhupinder Singh passes away in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Noted playback singer and musician Bhupinder Singh passed away at a suburban hospital in Mumbai on Monday.
A wave of sorrow engulfed listeners as well as the cinema and music industry which he enriched for approximately 50 years.
Singh was a renowned ghazal singer who made a formidable team with his talented wife Mitali Mukherjee.
He was also master of several musical instruments led by the guitar. He played the guitar in most of RD Burman's songs including Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko.
Bhupi, as he was fondly called, first became known to mass audiences through Chetan Anand's Haqeeqat (1964, Hoke majboor mujhe) in which he also acted as an army soldier. This was followed by Aakhri Khat (1966, Rut jawan jawan, which was also picturised on him).
His acting talent was not explored further as he opted for playback, stage performances and music albums. His career includes a series of super hit numbers in Gulzar's Mausam (Dil Dhoondhta hai), Bhimsain's Gharaonda (Do deewane shehr mein), Raj Sippy's Satte Pe Satta (Dukki pe dukki ho) as well as Basu Bhattacharya's films like Grih Pravesh (Boliye sureeli boliyan).
"Bhupinderji was 83 years old. He was suffering from colon cancer and then caught Covid," said the sister of his wife, singer Mitali.
"He passed away in Criticare Hospital, Andheri East. He was diagnosed just a week ago. Mitaliji is understandably distressed, after all they were married since 40 years. The details of his last rites will be announced shortly."
The funeral will likely be in Andheri West where he lived.
A spate of condolences began pouring in from fans, singers and music artistes late Monday.
