They informed the customs department, a static surveillance team of EC and the income tax department. An initial inquiry revealed that the money belonged to a bank.

At the time of going to the press, the money was not returned to the bank.

“Since the value exceeded Rs 10 lakh, we did not open the sealed van or the lock,” said a police officer. “No case was registered.”

The inquiry showed that the foreign currency was sent from Singapore to a Mumbai bank. It was cleared at the airport and was being taken to the bank, said the officer. Bank officials produced the relevant documents, which were being examined by govt officials.
