NEW DELHI: Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC on Saturday condemned Arvind Sawant's derogatory remark referring to her as "imported maal," stating that the objectification of women and outraging their modesty is a serious issue.

In a statement to the media, Shaina confirmed that an FIR has been registered at the Nagpada police station under Sections 79 and 356(2) for this offense. She emphasized, “This is a fight for the respect of women… Objectification of women is not a small problem. The truth will be in front of everyone in the video, but this mindset and perverted mentality is visible.”

The controversy erupted when Sawant, a member of the Shiv Sena faction led by Uddhav Thackeray, allegedly commented, "Imported 'maal' doesn't work here; only original 'maal' does," in reference to Shaina's political shift from the BJP.

In response to the backlash, Sawant claimed he did not directly name Shaina NC, asserting, “I only said that someone who is an outsider will not be able to work here.” He accused his opponents of trying to tarnish his reputation and stated that he has always respected women throughout his 55 years in politics.

Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde also condemned Sawant’s comments, declaring them "unfortunate" and suggesting that if Balasaheb Thackeray were alive, he would have denounced such remarks. He warned that the upcoming elections would see women holding those who disrespect them accountable.

The Maharashtra Assembly election is scheduled for November 20, with results expected on November 23.
