THANE: In a sting operation conducted by an NGO recently, three doctors from Dombivli were caught allegedly performing a pre-natal sex determination test on a woman and then admitting her for abortion after the foetus was found to be that of a girl. The case, a first in Thane district, has caused a flutter in the medical fraternity. The woman, who was in her 21st week of pregnancy, had visited radiologist Dr Dinesh Agrawal with volunteers of the Yuwak Kranti Dala Satara-based NGO that works in the field of human rights violation.
Agrawal conducted the pre-natal sex determination test and gave his report that it was a female foetus. When the patient asked the doctor to abort the baby, she was directed to Dr Amol Gadgil, a gynaecologist who runs the Ishwar Maternity Home in Dombivli (E). The third doctor in the case was Dr Sarika Dube, who works as a radiologist with the maternity home. The NGO activists recorded the conversation between the woman and the doctors on an audio tape.
"We have initiated action against Dr Agrawal under the provisions of the Pre-Natal Determination Test (PNDT) Act. If found guilty, he can be sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 50,000... ... Dr Gadgil was found running the MTP centre without registration, which is a criminal offence. A police complaint will be lodged on Monday," said Thane district civil surgeon Dr P M Chapalgaonkar.
The authorities said the doctors were guilty on another count as they were preparing to perform an abortion on the woman who was in her 21st week of pregnancy. No abortions can be conducted after 20 weeks. Dr Gadgil pleaded innocence and said: "It's true that we did not complete the formalities of renewing our licence. But we did not agree to perform the operation. Unfortunately, we have been coerced into giving the statements." The civil surgeon has with immediate effect terminated the licenses of the sonography centres. Varsha Deshpande of the NGO said: "It's not merely a social evil, it's genocide. Society does not take serious note of this crime against woman as the foetus is never seen."
