MUMBAI: A tragic accident unfolded on Wednesday evening when passengers of the Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express were run over by the speeding Karnataka Express near Jalgaon, leaving multiple fatalities and injuries in its wake.
The incident occurred around 4:50 PM, after the Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express came to a sudden halt between Pardhande and Mayeji railway stations. Passengers onboard reportedly pulled the alarm chain, suspecting a fire in one of the coaches. Panic spread rapidly as many passengers jumped from the halted train onto an adjoining track.
Unaware of the danger, they remained on the track just as the Bengaluru-New Delhi Karnataka Express approached. Railway officials stated that the Karnataka Express was navigating a curved section of the track when the driver spotted the crowd. Despite blaring the horn and applying emergency brakes, the train could not stop in time, resulting in the tragic collision.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as those on the track struggled to move away, but many could not escape. Railway authorities and local emergency services have since launched rescue and relief operations.
An official confirmed that the Karnataka Express driver made every possible effort to avert the tragedy but was unable to avoid the collision. The exact number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
