Schools to raise awareness about sugar consumption
Mumbai: The Education Inspector of the North Division of Brihanmumbai has instructed all schools to display boards, which will provide information about the risks of excessive sugar consumption, recommended sugar intake and sugar content present in commonly consumed foods. Schools have been instructed to install these boards in prominent areas such as cafeterias, classrooms, and common areas for continuous awareness. This move has come in the wake of the National Commision for the Protection of Child Rights directive to all school boards to display these information boards to combat rising type 2 diabetes in children in a letter in March. Type 2 diabetes also leads to obesity, dental disorders, metabolic disorders, and negatively impacts the long term academic performance of a child, said the letter.
