MUMBAI: A day after TOI reported that a paanwala had encroached upon actor
Vikas Bhalla's land in Bandra (W) and had used the actor's address to procure various documents, the BMC demolished the structure on Thursday afternoon.
In the evening, however, a group of Shiv Sainiks came to Bhalla's house and threatened his family with dire consequences if they didn't let the paanwala set up shop again.
"A group of 7-8 men came, saying they were from the Shiv Sena, and threatened to kill us,'' Bhalla said.
Officials said there was a delay in carrying out the demolition because of a stay that was granted by the city civil court.
"We carried out the demolition after the city civil court lifted the stay over the demolition notice we had served the shop. The matter was in court since 2007. On Thursday, the court told our legal department that the stay was lifted and that we could go ahead,'' said a civic official of the H-West ward.
Last week, Bhalla found out that Suraj Ram Singh, the paanwala outside his house on Hill Road, had given the actor's address to get a ration card, a power connection and a couple of bank accounts for himself and his wife.
Incidentally, Singh had encroached on a part of Bhalla's land which the family had given up after a request from the BMC for road-widening.
Late on Thursday, the paanwala's wife and son camped out outside Bhalla's house. The Bandra police have charged the son for disorderly behaviour.
