Thane: Thousands of residents staying along the northern tip of Ghodbunder Highway and Panchpakhadi had to endure 4 to 11 hours of power cuts in the sweltering summer heat Friday due to damage to underground power lines at two different locations.
While normalcy resumed in Panchpakhadi after 11 hours, the supply that got disrupted at GB Road at 4 pm was yet to resume normalcy even till late Friday.
The ordeal for Panchpakhadi residents began around 5 am when a fault was reported in an underground cable, leaving the entire area in darkness. MSEDCL officials blamed a snag in some machinery deployed for civic infra for accidentally hitting the cable. Further delay was caused in securing permissions from the corporation to dig the affected road. Power resumed only by 4 pm, officials said.
"The situation was unbearable, especially for the elderly and the ailing," complained a resident.
Elsewhere, at Ghodbunder, a municipal contractor deployed for laying water lines accidentally damaged a power line, plunging areas beyond Kasarvadavali in darkness for nearly five hours Friday evening. Shiv Sena corporator Siddharth Ovalekar said the supply was cut by 4 pm and normalcy was not yet restored.
Authorities said supply would resume only by late night.
