The vacation judge, Justice Ajay Gadkari, told him to surrender before the police on or before May 23. Nilesh is the son of former chief minister Narayan Rane. He and four others are accused of kidnapping and assaulting Chiplun taluka president Sandeep Sawant on April 24.

Nilesh’s advocate, Rajendra Shirodkar, argued that the whole story was “cooked up” and there is no material on record to show his client’s involvement. He said Nilesh would cooperate with the police if given pre-arrest bail.

Prosecutor Arfan Sait countered that Sawant’s complaint is corroborated by his medical certificate and the statement of his wife who had called Nilesh’s brother Nitesh and even his mother for his release.
