‘Racecourse club deserves world-class facilities’

Mumbai: The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) is making mega plans for a modern clubhouse and sporting facilities. The transformation will be a shot in the arm for 8,000-odd RWITC members who so far only had a mini-clubhouse for dining, a card room and a gymnasium.The proposal for the new clubhouse is expected to cheer up members who have been complaining about having been kept in the dark by RWITC officials over the entire process of the deal with the state govt and civic body. “A reputed club like ours deserves such facilities. It’s good that we will now be getting it,” said Milan Patel, a member.Once the world-class sporting facilities are in place, RWITC is likely to become another venue for top international, national and state-level sports tournaments in the city. Prominent clubs in the city like Cricket Club of India, Bombay Gymkhana, National Sports Club of India, Willingdon Sports Club and others, including various gymkhanas at Marine Drive, regularly host sporting events.At present, only equestrian events are conducted by Amateur Riders’ Club at the racecourse, which include dressage, show jumping and hunter trials. Polo competitions are also held annually there.
