MUMBAI: It's common to see not-so-flattering travel blogs about Mumbai, where foreign tourists caution fellow travellers to look out for muggers and people out to dupe them.
While the government has started sensitising the police towards these issues, private companies have also joined the exercise.
On Saturday, Kuoni Academy of Travel (KAT) conducted the first of the two training programmes for a batch of 40 personnel from the tourism police force to familiarise them with the needs of tourists.

Other than addressing the communication problem faced by city cops while dealing with tourists, the eight-hour programme dealt with other aspects like customer care, complaint management system, practical tips to resolve complaints and the role of the police force in dissemination of information to tourists.
"These programmes will go a long way in making Mumbai tourist friendly," said A K Bhatia of KAT, who conducted the workshop. He added that at the end of the programme the participants will be given certificates...

The training programme looked separately into the needs of domestic and international tourists and stressed on the need to make the visitors feel comfortable in a foreign land. The participants were also taken to the Gateway of India to look at ways the police can be of help in tourist spots.
The city has always been a popular entry/exit point for tourists and statistics say that about 40 % of people who travel to India, visit the city of Mumbai.
