PM Modi to inaugurate Mumbai Metro 3’s final stretch from Worli to Cuffe Parade on Sept 30, announces chief minister Devendra Fadnavis
Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the final stretch of the underground Metro 3 corridor from Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli to Cuffe Parade on Sept 30, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Tuesday. Modi will also inaugurate the Navi Mumbai International Airport, a project expected to ease congestion at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, on the same day.
Fadnavis, while addressing BJP's Vijay Sankalp Melava at NSCI Dome in Worli, said the Mahayuti govt was delivering infrastructure "at a scale unseen before". "During the MVA's 15 years, only 11km of Metro was inaugurated. Under us, 354km will become operational," the CM said, adding that projects such as the Coastal Road, Metro network, east-west road connectors, and Vadhavan Port would reimagine Mumbai.
Metro Line 3, the city's first underground corridor, spans 33.5km from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR and is being opened in phases. The Aarey-BKC stretch began operations in Oct 2024, followed by the BKC-Acharya Atre Chowk section in May 2025. With the Acharya Atre Chowk–Cuffe Parade section set to open soon, south Mumbai's business district will finally be directly linked to the BKC and beyond, promising faster commutes and easing congestion.
On Dharavi's redevelopment, billed as the world's largest slum rehabilitation project, Fadnavis reiterated that nearly 10 lakh residents would get homes within Dharavi itself. "Even those technically ineligible will not be evicted. No family will be forced back onto the roadside," he said, adding that small industries from Dharavi would be given formal status and five-year tax waivers.
Targeting the Thackeray brothers, Fadnavis said, "We are reimagining Mumbai through infrastructure, they are eyeing the chair. But they won't get it. Mahayuti will ensure the saffron flag is hoisted atop Mumbai and a Mahayuti mayor is installed in BMC."
Mumbai BJP president and MLA Ameet Satam accused Shiv Sena (UBT) of "looting BMC funds". "Forget 2G or the coal scam; in the last 30 years, they looted BMC to the tune of Rs 3 lakh crore," he alleged. Warning against demographic shifts, Satam added: "Any attempt to change the colour of Mumbai will be thwarted. If Shiv Sena (UBT) comes to power, then one ‘Khan' will become the mayor. We will not let that happen."
