MUMBAI: The old and congested areas in south Mumbai, especially the locality around Kalbadevi, are always prone to such incidents, said local residents.
These areas are congested and the buildings are very close to each other, which makes it difficult for the fire brigade to reach the affected buildings during crises.
Many people expressed concern over the issue and suggested fire audit of the buildings.
“The BMC’s job is to prevent such incidents and save lives. We suggest that the civic authority coordinate with the local residents. They should convince them about a fire audit and then suggest preventive measures. The authority should fix responsibility to ensure that the buildings are equipped with firefighting systems,” said Niranjan Shetty, chief spokesperson, BJP Mumbai.
The old buildings are always a matter of concern during the monsoon. Newly appointed municipal commissioner, Ajoy Mehta, instructed his juniors to evacuate dilapidated buildings and adopt proper mechanism to avoid any untoward incidents during the rainy season.
