MUMBAI: Even as the success rate in the country and Chennai region dropped marginally this time, the number of high scorers saw a significant increase. The number of students who scored a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 10 (score above 95%) rose at both national and regional levels by 20% and 18%, respectively.
City schools, though, witnessed mixed results.

At DAV Public School, New Panvel, the number of students who secured a full score of 10 CGPA increased to 64 this year from 53 in 2014. Principal Jayashreee Khandekar said, “The good results are going to be advantageous for students. These will definitely have an impact on admissions.”
Similar was the situation at DAV International School, Kharghar, where 23% students scored a CGPA of 10. This year, students have only received grades and not yet got the marks.
Average scores at schools have also improved. Ganesh Parmeshwaran, principal, Bal Bharti School, Airoli, said, “Students have definitely scored better than last year. Last year, our average CGPA was 8.6. It has now improved to 8.8%.”
Kendriya Vidyalaya, Powai, saw a decline in students who scored 10 GCPA. Principal Mamata Bhattacharya said, “This year, the number of students who secured a CGPA of 10 has reduced compared to last year. One of the reasons for this fall could be the difficulty level of the Math question paper.” At R N Podar School, Santacruz, students securing a CGPA of 10 reduced to 42 from 60 in 2014.

With both CBSE and ICSE Class X students registering more high scorers, the pressure is now on SSC students to make their mark to not be disadvantaged in junior college admissions. “SSC results will be the deciding factor for junior college admissions,” said Prashant Redij, principal, Hilda Castelino High School, Kandivli.
