MUMBAI: Mercury dipped even further on Thursday increasing the chill during evening and early morning. The minimum recorded temperature fell to 17.6 degrees Celsius from 19.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Weather officials said that fluctuations in temperature have been noticed over the past few days, but only if the temperature drops consistently over a few days, can they surely say that winter has hit the city.

On Thursday, the minimum temperature recorded in Santa Cruz was 17.6 degrees Celsius, but Colaba recorded a minimum of 21.5 degrees Celsius. On Monday and Tuesday, it was 21 degrees Celsius. "This looks like a random fluctuations, where the weather is changing every day. Only if the temperature keeps dropping below minimum can we say that winter has arrived," said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Officials
added that the drop in temperature hasn't been consistent enough for it to be pronounced "winter", and a high maximum temperature continues to ensure that the days are warm.
November was much cooler last year compared to 2013, said an IMD official. Last November, the minimum temperature recorded was 14.6 degrees Celsius.
On Thursday, the minimum temperature recorded in Santa Cruz was 17.6 degrees Celsius, but Colaba recorded 21.5 degrees Celsius.
Based on the wind patterns and temperature fluctuations, the IMD forecasts the minimum temperature to be about 19 degrees Celsius in the next two days. This means Mumbaikars should keep a light jacket handy while venturing out in the evening or early morning. The minimum temperature dropped to 19.6 degrees on Wednesday.
