NGO project Mumbai to host 'Jallosh' beach clean up event on April 20
MUMBAI: An award winning NGO Project Mumbai will host its water bodies and beach clean up drive on April 20 to celebrate EARTH DAY. This time children of Mumbai will clean the beaches of plastic waste.
The clean up is being planned on April 20 at the Juhu beach and will take place in the morning from 7.30 am and end by 9.30 am. The entire process, location details etc will be sent to those who register on whatsapp number 9653330712 or write to volunteer@projectmumbai.org.
Only those children above six years of age can participate and can be accompanied by an adult. While entry is by registration, the last date to register is April 18, said Project Mumbai's Founder Shishir Joshi.
Project Mumbai's award winning initiative Jallosh, is already in the Limca Book of Records for hosting the largest citizen led initiative to clean Mumbai's water bodies.
With most children now done with their exams and before they set off on vacations, Project Mumbai has curated this clean up keeping children and sustainability in mind. All the plastic waste which gets collected will then get recycled into amenities--such as benches, bins and pots by Project Mumbai and placed in public space
Hundreds of benches, recycled from plastic waste and an effort of Project Mumbai, are already in municipal parks and municipal schools. Project Mumbai recently also created a zero waste garden in the Jijamata zoo, from plastic waste donated by citizens.
"Most schools have sustainability and environment as part of academic learning. Ours is a hands-on experience to these young champs," said Joshi.
"Of course, our focus also remains the safety of every child and inculcating a sense of giving back to the community--volunteerism--and hence we are ensuring that every child will be accompanied by an adult. Health and hygiene kits and adequate water will be kept for hydration, having said that, children are being asked to carry their water bottles and caps, and be appropriately attired--comfortable shoes etc", he added.
Each participant will get a momento from a recycled plastic waste apart from a certificate of participation from Project Mumbai. Project Mumbai's Jallosh, which is one of the most popular beach cleaning initiatives across volunteering segments, has already seen a huge response from schools and parents, wanting to get their children involved in volunteering.
NGO Project Mumbai is also the recipient of the Green NGO of the Year and was recently awarded the global Anthem Award for sustainability in New York.

I went once in the past for this cleanup and realized that all the mess on the beach was the result of our city drainage that drains into the sea... and the tide washing all the garbage onto the beach. the BMC needs to get their act together first. Read allPost comment
