Navi Mumbai airport inaugurated: Jaw-dropping photos of India's largest Greenfield airport project; built at Rs 19,650 crore

Ambitious launch plans
During its first month of operations, NMIA will operate from 8am to 8pm. Its runway will be able to handle 8–10 flights per hour, according to BVJK Sharma, CEO of NMIA.
Akasa Air also plans to operate 15 daily domestic flights from day one.
Addressing Mumbai’s capacity constraints
“The demand for air travel from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is 70–75 million passengers per annum,” said Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings.
“Mumbai, as a region, is underserved due to capacity constraints. NMIA will help eliminate this congestion.”
Phase 1 of NMIA will operate with a single runway and one terminal building, designed to handle 20 million passengers per year.
Two airports for Mumbai
The commissioning of NMIA will make Mumbai the first urban agglomeration in India to offer commercial air travel through two airports.
While the current Mumbai airport handles around 950 flights daily, NMIA is expected to operate around 380 flights per day during Phase 1.
Additionally, NMIA will house India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facilities, and aims to become a significant cargo hub.
Largest Greenfield airport in India
The airport, covering 1,160 hectares, is designed to eventually handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.
In line with sustainable practices, the airport will have dedicated storage for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), solar power generation of approximately 47 MW, and EV bus services for public connectivity.
NMIA will also be the first airport in the country to be connected by Water Taxi.
Metro connectivity and integrated mobility
The prime minister will also inaugurate phase 2B of Mumbai Metro Line-3, stretching from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 12,200 crore.
With the inauguration of Phase 2B, Modi will dedicate the entire Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) to the nation. The 33.5 km underground line has 27 stations and will cater to 13 lakh passengers daily.
Built at a cost of Rs 19,650 crore under a public–private partnership, NMIA is India’s largest greenfield airport project. Spanning 1,160 hectares, it is designed for operational excellence and scalability. The project sets new benchmarks for airport planning and infrastructure. Its size allows simultaneous handling of multiple operations without congestion. Strategic planning ensures maximum efficiency in passenger and cargo flow. Terminal design combines functionality with modern architecture. NMIA is equipped for seamless integration with future expansions. It reflects India’s commitment to global aviation standards. This project positions Mumbai as a world-class multi-airport city.

NMIA complements Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport to form a dual-airport system. This arrangement will ease air traffic congestion significantly in the Mumbai region. Passengers will benefit from reduced delays and faster processing times. Airlines gain additional capacity for scheduling domestic and international flights. The dual-airport system strengthens Mumbai’s status as a global aviation hub. Coordination between both airports ensures smooth operational management. It supports high-volume passenger traffic during peak travel seasons. Multi-airport integration improves resource allocation and safety. This system is a key step in modernizing Mumbai’s air transport infrastructure.
The airport features a 3,700-metre runway capable of handling large aircraft efficiently. Air traffic control systems are state-of-the-art, ensuring safe operations. Navigation, surveillance, and communication technology support high traffic volumes. Runway design accommodates simultaneous take-offs and landings during peak hours. Weather-resistant materials and safety systems enhance reliability. Operational efficiency is maximized through advanced scheduling and monitoring tools. NMIA features a fully automated cargo terminal capable of 0.5 million metric tonnes per year initially. The terminal is designed for rapid scaling to 3.25 million MMT in future phases. Semi-automated material handling systems streamline cargo movement efficiently. Shipment tracking and digital management ensure transparency and speed. Cashless and paperless operations minimize errors and improve turnaround. Cargo facilities are integrated with nearby industrial and port areas. Advanced logistics support global trade and supply chain operations. The design reduces bottlenecks and optimizes freight handling capacity. This cargo hub will make NMIA a leading international freight gateway.
NMIA incorporates an Automated People Mover to connect all four passenger terminals. The APM provides seamless inter-terminal transfers for faster mobility. A landside APM links city-side transport infrastructure to terminals efficiently. Passengers experience minimal waiting times and smooth internal movement. The system reduces dependence on shuttle buses and road transport inside the airport. Accessibility features ensure inclusivity for differently-abled passengers. Future expansions will integrate new terminals and parking areas with the APM. This technology improves operational fluidity and passenger convenience. It positions NMIA as a modern, high-tech airport with intelligent transport systems.
NMIA is strategically located near industrial zones, ports, and transport hubs. It is 14 km from JNPT, 22 km from MIDC Taloja, 35 km from Mumbai Port via MTHL, and 32 km from Thane. These connections support freight logistics and regional mobility. Proximity to economic centers facilitates trade and industrial connectivity. Integration with road and metro networks ensures smooth access for passengers. Strategic placement improves emergency response and operational efficiency. The location enhances the airport’s role as a multi-modal transportation hub. NMIA’s accessibility is planned to accommodate long-term traffic growth. Its position strengthens Mumbai’s aviation and logistics ecosystem.
NMIA will be India’s first airport linked via water taxi services. This innovative solution provides eco-friendly and efficient access to the airport. It reduces road congestion while offering passengers alternative transit options. Water taxi routes connect key points in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region directly to the airport. This integration complements existing road and rail networks. Electric-powered vessels reduce carbon emissions, supporting sustainability goals. Service schedules will synchronize with peak passenger traffic times. Passengers gain flexibility and faster access to terminals. Water taxi connectivity enhances NMIA’s unique positioning in global airport design.

It provides seamless connectivity to heritage and cultural districts such as Fort, Kala Ghoda, and Marine Drive, as well as key administrative and financial hubs.
The metro line has been designed to integrate with other transport modes, including railways, airports, other metro lines, and monorail services.
‘Mumbai One’ mobility app
The app offers integrated mobile ticketing, eliminates queuing, and provides seamless multi-modal connectivity through a single dynamic ticket. It also gives real-time journey updates, alternative routes, estimated arrival times, map-based information on nearby stations, attractions, and an SOS feature for commuter safety.
Skill development initiative
PM Modi will also inaugurate the Short-Term Employability Program (STEP), a new initiative by the Department of Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation in Maharashtra.
The program will be rolled out across 400 government ITIs and 150 technical high schools.
STEP will establish 2,500 new training batches, including 364 exclusive batches for women and 408 batches in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), Electric Vehicles (EV), Solar, and Additive Manufacturing.
