MUMBAI: A city crime branch team that went to Nagaland and rescued a Ghatkopar businessman, who was allegedly kidnapped there, returned empty handed because the local police refused to hand him over, saying he was an accused in a cheating case there. The Mumbai police, however, got the custody of the three accused.
The Ghatkopar-based businessman, who deals in coal, reportedly travelled to Nagaland after being lured by acquaintances over a business opportunity.
Upon arrival, he was allegedly kidnapped by three people, who demanded a large amount from his family, claiming he owed them.
On his family's complaint, the crime branch team traced the victim in Nagaland. The police there claimed that he was wanted in a cheating case registered in the state. An argument reportedly ensued between the local police and the Mumbai crime branch. However, after senior police officials from Mumbai called up their counterparts in Nagaland, the Nagaland cops allowed the Mumbai police to take the accused along and detained the victim in their custody.
The victim had a financial dispute over a business transaction with the accused in Nagaland. The accused party had filed cheating complaint against the Mumbai businessman and lured him to visit the state.
A senior Mumbai police officer declined to comment.
