3km Underground Pedestrian Tunnel Network Proposed

MMRC has proposed a 3km network of underground pedestrian tunnels to boost first- and last-mile connectivity around Metro Line 3’s Science Centre and BKC stations. The plan aims to offer seamless movement, reduce congestion and link Metro passengers to key commercial, cultural and high-speed rail destinations. (PHOTO CREDIT: AI)

Shorter Link to Nehru Planetarium Mapped

MMRC has proposed a 500m pedestrian tunnel to Nehru Planetarium from the Science Centre station. This shorter link will enhance visitor access to the cultural precinct, reduce roadside congestion and streamline movement between key public spaces in the Worli area.

Tunnels to Feature Escalators and Lifts

The tunnels are expected to be around 5 metres wide and equipped with escalators or lift access at entry points. MMRC plans to ensure barrier-free, user-friendly movement for commuters, office-goers, senior citizens and tourists, with design focus on accessibility and safety.

4/10

Completion Target Set for 2029–30

The underground corridors are targeted for completion by 2029–30. Once operational, these tunnels are expected to increase Metro Line 3 ridership, offer safer walking routes and provide seamless integration with high-speed rail, cultural centres and business districts. Similar tunnel systems already operate at T2 and CSMT.

Direct Metro-to-Bullet Train Corridor Planned

The longest link is a 1.4km tunnel in BKC connecting Metro Line 3 directly to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train terminal via Tata Colony. This all-weather corridor will allow passengers to switch between the Metro and high-speed rail without stepping outdoors, improving commuter convenience and intercity connectivity. TOD Policy to Boost Connectivity

The tunnels fall under Transit-Oriented Development provisions of DCPR 33(23). Properties within 500m of Metro stations can receive additional FSI if developers build direct access vestibules. This policy is expected to encourage better integration of future linkages and support smoother pedestrian mobility.

Project Cost Estimated at Rs 250 Crore

The pedestrian corridors are expected to cost about ₹250 crore. The proposal was finalised after discussions between BMC and MMRC, with both agencies likely to share expenses proportionately. The project forms part of larger efforts to integrate multiple transit modes in Mumbai. (PHOTO CREDIT: AI)

All-Weather, Safe Pedestrian Movement Grid

According to MMRC planning director R Ramanna, the tunnels will form a continuous underground movement grid. Built for all-weather use, the system aims to improve safety, reduce pedestrian-road conflicts and offer a smoother walking experience in two of Mumbai’s busiest commercial and leisure hubs. Worli–Promenade Tunnel to Ease Traffic

1.1km underground tunnel from Science Centre station to the Worli promenade is planned, passing below Mahalaxmi Racecourse. This corridor aims to reduce surface-level traffic, ease pedestrian movement and connect office-goers and visitors to one of Mumbai’s most crowded waterfront stretches. (PHOTO CREDIT: AI)

Consultant to Finalise Designs and Surveys

MMRC will appoint a design and project management consultant to carry out detailed surveys, finalise tunnel alignments, prepare engineering drawings and recommend effective construction methods. This step will shape execution plans and timelines for the ambitious pedestrian network. (PHOTO CREDIT: AI)

Hope there is safe, convenient underground pedestrian passage between metro-3, bullet train terminal and metro2-B. Hope it is airconditioned and with a travelator. Idiotic BMC should take the idea and construct an underground airconditioned pedestrian subway from bandra east rail station to BKC .
