Mumbai: Rescued golden jackal dies

MUMBAI: The young male

golden jackal

which was rescued from

Vikhroli

on March 29, died on Sunday, following 10 days of intensive medical care. At the time the jackal had been rescued by the activists of Resqink Association for Wildlife Welfare (RAWW) from

Godrej Creekside Colony

in Vikhroli, there were several injuries and animal bite marks on him.

"It is sad that the young golden jackal could not survive. It had developed several complications due to the earlier bite marks and other injuries on its body. It was also highly dehydrated and in a state of shock, which is why saline was constantly administered; but it could not make it through," said Pawan Sharma of RAWW.

Incidentally, another body of a jackal killed in a road accident on the Mulund-Airoli road was found on Sunday. Forest officials were informed about this incident as well.

Experts said that Golden Jackals are often seen in the Mangrove habitats of

Eastern Express Highway

, and also towards the forested regions in

Kandivali

in western suburbs. However very less is known about them.

A city based environmentalist Mili Shetty informed: "Often a pack of jackals can be seen coming to a waterbody in Charkop area, near Kandivali."
