MUMBAI: The Mumbai Building Repairs and Reconstruction Board declared 23 cessed buildings in the

to Mahim-Sion) as most dangerous to live and asked its residents to vacate.

The chief officer of the board, Dinkar Jagdale, issued a list of all the 23 buildings where over 800 residents are currently living. Of these, 197 have been shifted to other places. The board is trying to make some alternative accommodation available for the remaining residents.

"The board offers temporary alternative accommodation in its transit camp for the residents of dangerous, collapsed or under repair buildings. As and when needed, the board issues notices to vacate the premises of the most dangerous buildings, intending to save lives and properties," said Jagdale in a statement issued.

The board has appealed to residents, asking them to cooperate with the board and vacate the buildings so that precautionary measures, such as demolition of dangerous parts and propping, can be taken up.

The board also warned residents against using dangerous portions of the buildings. If they notice any signs, they should immediately inform the board officials, BMC ward office, fire brigade, police or control room. Signs could include widening of existing cracks, parts of the ceiling falling down, the floor separating from the wall columns.

In a pre-monsoon survey conducted by the BMC this year, 499 buildings have been categorized as dangerous and enlisted in C1 category. BMC classifies buildings in three categories: C1 (most dangerous), C2 (needs major structural repairs), and C3 (needs minor repairs).
