Mumbai set to reclaim its coastline
For decades, Mumbai’s residents have had limited access to the city’s waterfront. The Union government has now approved an Rs 887-crore plan to build a marina at Princes Dock. The facility will be open to the public and is expected to bring a new dimension to leisure and water-based activities in the city.
World-class marina to host over 400 yachts
The marina will have berthing facilities for over 400 yachts, each measuring up to 30 metres. This will be the city’s first marina of this scale, capable of hosting both domestic and international visitors interested in boating and sailing.
Sailing schools and public spaces
Apart from berths, the project will include sailing schools, training facilities, and open waterfront areas for the public. These features aim to encourage learning, recreation, and engagement with the sea for Mumbaikars.
Employment opportunities
The marina project is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs, including positions in construction, operations, hospitality, and marine services. It will also help people in the city develop skills related to boating, tourism, and waterfront activities.
Funding through a hybrid model
The marina will be built through a hybrid model. The Mumbai Port Authority will invest around Rs 470 crore for marine infrastructure, while a private operator will invest Rs 417 crore in onshore development such as parking, leisure spaces, and support services.
Supporting India’s Blue Economy
The project supports the government’s coastal tourism plans and aims to strengthen India’s blue economy. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called it a “turning point” for Mumbai and said it would encourage private investment while giving a boost to maritime tourism.
Infrastructure and accessibility
The marina will be built with essential infrastructure including a breakwater, parking areas, and roads linking it to the shore. These additions are designed to make the facility easily accessible for visitors, yacht owners, and students attending sailing schools.
Tenders and project timeline
Tenders for the project have been floated, with bids closing on December 29, 2025. The marina will cover nearly 12 hectares of water area. Once built, a dedicated agency will manage its operations.
