Mumbai: City crime branch officials on Sunday arrested a gold ornaments manufacturer from West Bengal in connection with an alleged cheating case involving over 2.8 kg of 24-carat gold worth nearly Rs 3.8 crore entrusted to him by multiple jewellery businessmen in Mumbai.
The complainant, Bharat Jain, 45, a Santacruz-based gold trader, entrusted the manufacturer, Abulhasan Sheikh, with 1,946 grams of gold between Oct 8 and 11, 2025, for making jewellery according to customer requirements. The gold was allegedly worth around Rs 2.6 crore then.
Police said Jain had regularly handed over gold to Sheikh for manufacturing work and trusted him due to their long-standing business dealings. However, when Jain sent his worker, Vikram Singh, to collect the finished ornaments, the factory was found shut and Sheikh’s mobile phone was switched off.
Police said the accused could not be found at the residential address in Masjid Bunder mentioned on his Aadhaar card. During investigation, police allegedly found that several other businessmen had also been cheated in a similar manner. Crime branch officials said technical surveillance later led the police to the Purba Bardhaman district in West Bengal.
