Mumbai police apprehend drunk driver responsible for injuring three
MUMBAI: A speeding car driven by Hiten Desai (53), the Home Automation Head at GM Modular Pvt, brushed past a woman and two others, including an on-duty policeman, in Khar (West), Mumbai, causing minor injuries on Sunday.
Khar police said Desai was driving under the influence of alcohol when he lost control of his vehicle on Linking Road in Bandra (East) at 8.45 pm, hitting the pedestrian and the on-duty cop while attempting to flee the scene.
"No one was killed in the accident. Those hit by Desai's car suffered minor injuries and were given medical assistance along with the injured cop. His blood test showed alcohol presence in his blood over the permissible limit," said a police officer of the Khar police station. Other police personnel on duty at the location and locals present at the accident site managed to apprehend Desai's car after he applied the emergency brake while trying to escape.
Desai claimed to have consumed alcohol at his home, but the police suspect he may have been drinking at a hotel before driving. He was produced before the holiday Court in Bandra on Monday and remanded to police custody for two days.
Desai has been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act, including attempt to commit culpable homicide, rash driving, causing hurt and grievous hurt by endangering others' lives, assaulting a public servant, driving dangerously and under the influence of alcohol, and failing to provide medical assistance to injured victims.
