For the first time, Mumbai NCPA’s play, ‘Shakuntala Awaits’, is all set to be premiered at ‘Here Theatre’ in New York City.
Talking about it, playwright-director, Isheeta Ganguly says, "It is truly a privilege to premiere 'Shakuntala Awaits' in NYC with the esteemed theatre with versatile cross-cultural cinema and theatre actors Purva Bedi and
Samrat Chakrabarti."
The Times music artiste with eight studio albums who’s on her path as a film maker as well, adds, "I have used Samrat’s voice in a live performance as a part of this show - one of the most rewarding additions to this rendition of the production."
Isheeta's English play is about how fate brings together Shakuntala and Dushyant and they fall in love in today's time.
It is a magical and deep love story set across continents. The play marks her third international production after 'Three Women' and 'Sundays with Chitra and Chaitali'.
She adds, “In many ways this play is both a mass and an urban love story, with a deep twist. True to the pandemic year, the original Mahabharata fable speaks of losing Shakuntala's ring, creating a bizarre uncertainty much like the initial months of the pandemic. Recovering the ring later becomes a restoration of promise as we begin to see light at the end of the tunnel with a vaccine. As a director, it’s been deeply rewarding to shape Purva and Samrat’s performance arc as they glide through complexities of their characters with fluidity and dexterity through each run.”
