Gatherings restricted at popular waterfalls, lakes and dams in Thane district

The Thane district administration has restricted gatherings at popular waterfalls, lakes and dams in its jurisdiction in the monsoon, fearing Covid infection and mishaps, officials said on Tuesday. Popular monsoon hangouts like Yeoor, Mumbra Retibunder, Malshej ghats, Barvi dam, Gaimukh and Uttan seashore, Khadavali river among others will remain out of bounds after district collector issued orders under section 144 of the CrPC, Epidemic Act and Disaster Management Act. "The orders have been issued in the wake of rising mishaps and also fears of Covid infection," Thane collector Rajesh Narvekar said.

Mumbai records lowest COVID-19 death count since March 28

Mumbai reported seven fresh fatalities due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, the lowest single-day death count since March 28, 2021. The caseload reached 7,13,002 with the addition of 673 new infections, the city civic body said.

Film producer Swapna Patker arrested for obtaining fake PhD degree

Marathi film producer Swapna Patker has been arrested by the Mumbai Police for obtaining a fake PhD degree and using it to secure a job as a psychologist at a Bandra hospital.

The 39-year-old is best known for producing the film Balkadu in 2015, which is a biopic of Shiv Sena founder Balasaheb Thackeray.

Coronavirus variant causing increased disease severity identified

Scientists at Pune's National Institute of Virology have isolated and characterised a coronavirus variant from two travellers: One who returned from the UK and the other from Brazil -- that exhibits increased disease severity in hamsters but doesn't pose a public health problem at the moment. The two samples of the B.1.1.28.2 variant are the only ones of its kind isolated by Indian labs so far.

Navi Mumbai civic school students to get internet data finance

A sum of Rs 1,000 each will betransferred into the accounts of 42,000 students of civic schools to enable them to buy internet data packages for smartphones to help them in online studies, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation in Maharashtra's Thane district announced on Tuesday.There are 75 civic schools, including 55 primary schools, under the NMMC.The sum will be paid in two instalments for the first semester, and efforts would also be taken to help those students who do not have smartphones, a civic official said."This decision was taken in October but then got pushed back as the COVID-19 cases started to fall and the aim at the time was to resume classroom teaching," said NMMC commissioner Abhijit Bangar.

Centre says door-to-door vaccination not possible; favours 'near-to-door' system

The Centre told the Bombay HighCourt on Tuesday that a door-to-door COVID-19 vaccination programme for senior citizens, specially-abled, bed-ridden and wheelchair-bound people is currently not possible, but it has decided to start "near-to-door" inoculation centres.The Union government in its affidavit filed in the HC said the National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration (NEGVAC) has considered the issue of door-to-door vaccination and opined that "near-to-door" vaccination would be an appropriate solution, and not door-to-door vaccination.The court noted that almost 25 crore people have been vaccinated in India.
