MUMBAI: At least 11 people died while scores were evacuated after a major fire broke out in Sunrise Hospital of Dreams Mall on LBS Marg in Bhandup (west), Mumbai on late Thursday.

A total of 14 fire engines and 10 jumbo water tankers went to the site to douse the flames.

More than 70 patients, including seven on ventilator support, were rescued and shifted to a different hospital.

"Rescue operation for 76 patients admitted to Covid care hospital is under way. Level-3 or level-4 fire broke out on the first floor of a mall at around 12.30am. Around 23 fire tenders are present at the spot," said DCP, Mumbai, Prashant Kadam.


According to civic disaster control room, of the total 76 patients, 73 were Covid-19 patients and three others were non-Covid patients.

Out of 73 Covid patients, 30 were shifted into Mulund Jumbo center and three others shifted to Fortis Hospital in Mulund.

The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.

Mumbai mayor Kishori Pednekar, who visited the incident site said that a detailed probe will be carried out to ascertain the cause of the fire.

"This is the first time I have seen a hospital in a mall. This is a very serious situation. Seven patients were on ventilators. There will be an investigation to ascertain the cause of the fire," Pednekar said.

The hospital is located on the third floor of the mall and is a Covid-19 care hospital.

Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 5 lakh to the deceased in the Sunrise Hospital fire.

Thackeray also directed an inspection in all such Covid hospitals that are a part of the building.
