Mumbai airport operations hit by heavy rains, flights delayed

MUMBAI: Heavy rainfall in Mumbai has caused major disruptions at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Wednesday.

The downpour led to a brief suspension of flight operations due to poor visibility, and local transportation services were also significantly affected.

Flight operations at the airport were suspended at 10.36am due to visibility dropping below safe levels. After a brief halt, services resumed at 10.55am when visibility improved to 1000 meters and the Runway Visual Range (RVR) reached 1200 meters.

Air India promptly issued an advisory on social media. "Flights to and from Mumbai may get affected due to heavy rains. Guests are advised to start early for the airport, as slow traffic and waterlogging may delay movement," Air India posted.



IndiGo also cautioned travelers about potential delays and advised them to check flight status before heading to the airport.



The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall, with very heavy rain in isolated areas. A nowcast warning was issued at 10:00 am, forecasting intense rainfall across Mumbai, its suburbs, Thane, Raigad, and parts of Pune.

Waterlogging has added to the traffic woes, closing the Andheri subway to vehicular traffic and causing congestion on other roads. Reports of waterlogging came from the Bhandup pumping station, Vikhroli, and near King Circle.

Passengers and residents are advised to plan their travels accordingly due to the disrupted transportation and unpredictable weather conditions.
