Mumbai: 16-year-old caught speeding car; FIR filed against mother

MUMBAI: Mulund police have booked a 45-year-old woman after her 16-year-old son was allegedly caught speeding in a high-end car in the wee hours of Sept 27.

As per the complaint filed by a police sub-inspector, a head constable on night patrol duty spotted the speeding car and tried to flag down the vehicle, but the driver did not stop. Police managed to intercept the car and asked the driver about his driving licence, which he couldn't produce.

As he claimed that he was 18 years old, he was detained and brought to the police station, and his parents were summoned with his official documents to verify his age. As per the documents submitted by the boy's mother, he was 16 years and seven months old.

As the teenager's father was out of town, police registered a case against the mother under Section 199 (A) of the Motor Vehicles Act on Oct 3. This section creates accountability for the parent or owner of a delinquent minor vis-a-vis an offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.
